June 18, 2005 marks the date for the third annual Bike4BreastCancer Pink Ribbon Ride, in memory of Kathleen McDonald.  Cyclists of all ages and abilities will once again participate in the event that has generated more than $20,000 in donations to Northern Michigan Hospital and Charlevoix Area Hospital, for use in education, training, and support programs, as well as mammogram screening and early detection assistance to women throughout Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.

This annual event is the legacy of Kathleen McDonald of Boyne City, founder of the Charlevoix/Emmet County Chapter of Bike4BreastCancer, who herself succumbed to the disease shortly before the inaugural event in 2003.  Her goal, and that of the many volunteers who participate each year, was to bring hope and valuable resources to breast cancer patients and their families, and to educate women on the importance of early detection.  Nationally, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

The Pink Ribbon Ride itself has grown annually.  This year’s event will include two 42-mile routes for intermediate to advanced riders, a 20-mile route, and a 7-mile route.  All routes begin at Veteran’s Park in downtown Boyne City, and travel along the scenic shorelines of Lake Charlevoix, Deer Lake, and Lake Michigan, passing through Northern Michigan towns and villages such as Charlevoix, Horton Bay, and Advance.  Some lucky cyclists may even be treated to a ride on the Ironton Ferry. Returning to the park, participants will be greeted with a picnic lunch and other activities, including a bike clinic, bike raffle, and fun for the whole family.  For those who do not ride but still want to participate, donations can be sent to:

Bike4BreastCancer
PO Box 242
East Jordan, MI  49727-0242

Advanced discounted registrations can now be made online by logging onto the Bike4BreastCancer website at: www.bike4breastcancer.org   On-site registrations ($30 individual, $50 per family) will begin at 7:00 a.m. in the park, and riders are free to begin their courses once they are checked in.  Participants can also offset the price of registration by collecting donations in equivalent amounts.  T-shirts and other materials commemorating the event can also be purchased online, or the day of the event.

Additional information may be obtained online, or by contacting Chairman Sue Morris at suemorris@bike4breastcancer.com
