Northern Michigan's Ribbon Ride Lead Chairperson, Sue Morris, Thanks Community

July 2004

The Charlevoix/Emmet County Pink Ribbon Ride was on June 19, at Veteran’s Park in Boyne Cit, Michigan, raising over $16,000 and surpassing last’s years total by more than $6000.  What is so important about this event is that 85% of the proceeds stay in the community to provide funding for program in breast cancer awareness, detection and prevention.  Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation has used the funds provides from last years ride to start the Cancer Resource Program, Circle of Strength, which will provide support, education and training for cancer patients and their support team.  Northern Michigan Hospital Foundation has combined money with other breast cancer funds to provide educational programs and finance mammograms and diagnostic test for women in need.

An event like this comes together only through the combined efforts of businesses and people in our communities.  By donating funds, goods and services, many individuals and businesses made it possible to surpass our own expectations.

Funding for research and funding a cure is very important however, I believe it is more important to take care of those in our communities.  I would look to some of the large industries in the area to provide support as well for this ride in the future.

I also extend a very special thank you to Kathy Johnson and Therese Green from the foundation for their invaluable advice and expertise, Scott and Barb from the Boyne City Chamber of Commerce, Candy Greene, Donna Moll, Bo Mayfield and Jon Foltz for manning our SAG stop and vehicle, and most of all my Pink Ribbon Committee:  Bonnie Brunett, Cheryl Hofwebber, Dean Lucier, Cathy Pumford, Terri Reynolds, Char Schuman, Kim Westrick, and Helen Truchan.  We would not have had the success we did without all of your help.

Please join us for next year’s ride on Saturday, June 18th, 2005.
