BACKGROUND:
Upon completion of her first cross-country solo bike ride in 1996, Bike4BreastCancer founder and BelAir resident Kathy Betz was convinced that she, through cycling, could reach into the hearts and minds of Americans to promote breast cancer awareness and education. Along with passionate volunteers, Betz and Bike4BreastCancer have developed a unique program to raise money for breast cancer while increasing grassroots awareness of early detection and treatment options.
Through national cross-country rides and small local rides across America, Bike4BreastCancer provides tangible support to the local communities involved. The Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation's campaign to raise funds for the newest tool in the battle against breast cancer is the local beneficiary of this event.
This is the first of two pink ribbon mini bike rides being held in Maryland leading up to the cross-country ride. The next will be in Greenbelt on September 21, 2002.
EDITORS NOTE: Bike4BreastCancer founder Kathy Betz as well as participating bikers will be available for interviews.
