Jersey Design Contest

Oct 18, 2011 by Sue Morris

The Northern Michigan Bike4BreastCancer ride will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on Saturday, June 16, 2012.  To help us commemorate this milestone, we are redesigning our jersey and putting it to the students in our area (Charlevoix & Emmet County) to come up with something special.
The contest is open to anyone age 14 to 21, and can be a high school or college student.  They must be attending school in Charlevoix or Emmet County (this includes home schooling), or in the case of a college student be from this area, and a graphic arts background is recommended.  Submissions will be taken through November 15, 2011, at which time a winner will be announced.  In the event that we don’t receive enough submissions, we will open the contest to the general public.  The design needs to be submitted in a vector format to be able to be reproduced on the jersey.

Monsters, Alligators, Rivulets, and Bo Derrick

Jun 30, 2010 No Comments

Our ME to MD RIDE is all about stuff like “Maine Monsters”, “Alligator skin roads”, “Rivulets”, and a change of scale to what we call the “Bo Derrick” scale.
And In Connecticut – “Mile Longs” or what Uncle Sunny called “Lung Busters” like Winchell Hill Road.
Ok, to explain, I’ll start with the Maine Monsters or giant steep hills we did not expect in Maine. The route was basically near the coast but we still found really big hills to carry our 50 lb loads up
and over. Maine was beautifully rugged and we often had miles between homes  until we got to the south end with it’s beaches.
June 23rd we rode into Kittery, Maine around 6pm looking for a seafood place to have Lobster before we leave Maine.
The first part of our ride on the 23rd was very nasty. The roadways were like “alligator skins” or perhaps the Appian Way from Rome; broken ...

ME to MD Blog Update: Thursday, June 24

Jun 25, 2010 No Comments

Arrived into Kittery around 6pm and found a seafood place to have Lobster before we leave Maine. One night in the Coachman on rt1 and off to Portsmouth Friday. Need to change the gearing on my bike too if I can find a shop.
The first part of our ride Thursday was very nasty. The roadways were like alligator skins or perhaps the Appian Way from Rome; broken and rough. I rated that road a10. However Route 35 from Sebago Lake for nearly 30 miles was a 1.5 almost perfect. Smooth roadway, 3-4ft shoulders in really good condition and very little elevation change (translate: hills).
The second half of the day turned sunny and pleasant and we topped it off with the shore drive road from Kennebunk almost to Kittery thru Wells Beach, and York Beach areas.
We rode into Portsmouth after a CB* at the Coachman Inn. Have a reservation at ...

Ready for the Challenge…

Jun 20, 2010 No Comments

Well it’s certainly been an adventure and my bike ride hasn’t even begun. Can’t wait!
I started well with a Bon voyage dinner in Aberdeen*. The commuter train to Wilmington Station (it’s under construction so I barely recognized it) all went well on Friday.
Saturday was quite different. Public transport ain’t all that great!
The Wilmington train was late an hour. My wife thought they provided blankets when it’s an overnight route but not! Seats are comfortable but you have your bags to use as a pillow. I got out my jacket as the air conditioner was determined to freeze everyone.
However, the train was express to Boston – wow!
I was excited to see so many people getting on commuter trains with bikes at the North Boston Station. Must have been 50. They were going for a day trip somewhere and the bikes and a small backpack sufficed.
Oh yeah the Wilmington train made ...
